Paper Sift Stage
Well done!
By this point you have passed your NSRT and been requested to send copies of your original certifications (GCSEs, STCWs etc etc). When I did my application I was also requested to complete a 'supplementary application form', this asked rather straightforward questions about my motivations to join the RFA, and more so my specific branch.
Naturally as I am not a recruiter I do not know what the textbook answers will be, nor am I an expert on any trade or branch. However I am sure as a minimum they are looking for clear and rational motivations joined with a basic level of grammar and verbal bearing.
The questions I can clearly remember are:
-Why do you want to join the RFA?
-What can you bring to the RFA?
and
-Why would you make an ideal officer?
Personally none of the questions on the form made me panic or run for the hills, however I found it a challenge to show my passion without sounding over the top and therefore a bit odd. It is upon reflection important to note that this is your opportunity to make an impression and stand our from potentially hundreds of other applicants, so do take your time! My own approach was to show I had done some background reading on the RFA, its operations and general way of life. In addition to having a clear understanding of my chosen trade and how I as a personality and professional can be a hardworking cog in the expansive RFA machine.
Once you have compiled all of your photocopies and filled out all the forms and sent them to HMNB Portsmouth (I recommend recorded delivery), you then have the joys of awaiting a paper application sift prior to your sift interview (more about that next time). From my limited knowledge of the inner naval service recruitment system, the paper sift is a filter to weed out those who aybe arent ready just yet or who's CV doesn't quite match the candidates they are after, im sure you can gain feedback if unsuccessful if you ask politely.
Sifts can vary from trade to trade, however mine was six months in the waiting, my best advice once your reach this stage is to keep it cool and continue to read up on the RFA. I promise you will need this knowledge at the next stage!
If you have any questions then as always feel free to message me directly!
